Old Camatta Ranching days

Our Ranching Story

The Ranch Beginnings

The Morrison family who started ranching in the late 1800’s was forced off of their home ranch. Our family during the 1950’s and 1960’s as southern California grew, the city encroached on the old ranch forcing the Morrison family out, but not out of the ranching lifestyle that we hold dear. In 1978 the Morrisons Moved their cattle and established their new home to the breath taking grassy, oak studded hills of the Camatta Ranch on the Central Coast of California. The Camatta Ranch has been a cattle ranch since Mexican Land Grant days dating back to 1846 when it was put together by 2 Hispanic men, Quintana & Herrera. Cattle Ranching is a way of life not a get rich quick scheme and it’s a lifestyle that you have to love. What started with Great- Great- Great grandpa John Keys Morrison, was passed to Alonzo, then to Roy, Robert, Mark and our children and now to our grandchildren.

THE GUEST RANCH STORY

The Ranch

Lazy Arrow Adventures is a dream come true to the Morrison Family. When Mark Morrison was a young boy, he dreamed of collecting exotic hoof stock and giving them a natural habitat. When he turned 18 years of age, his dream became a reality! He started with just a pair of buffalo and today Lazy Arrow LLC has over 250 exotic animals. Lazy Arrow on the Camatta Ranch opened up for tours over 30 years ago, and has grown, as a guest ranch, to included camping, farm stays, agriculture ranch life tours, Music stage, Weddings, Cowboy action shooting and many other outdoor activities. The Lazy Arrow is home to Mark and Felicia Morrison, and their children Haustin, Garrett, Emilee, and Tanna. The Morrison family opened up Lazy Arrow Outdoor Adventures so that others could share in their wholesome and peaceful way of life.

Our Family

Mark, Felicia and their family love this way of life, so they decided to home school their children and to diversify the family ranch from strictly raising cattle to raising exotic animals for tours, guest stays, farm experiences, women, children and family events. Mark and his family feel so blessed that they wanted to share their lifestyle with others through their Lazy Arrow Adventures. Guests have been enjoying the ranch for over 30+ years. Many of our guest who have enjoyed our ranch raised meat have asked to have our pasture raised beef, pork and venison. Responding to their requests we have made our meat available for purchase. Now Lazy Arrow Meats provides what the family has enjoyed and nourished us for generations.

We have a family business that has grown through the decades, with hard work, slow consistent growth, dedicated to the preservation of the land and care for our animals.

Conservation Easement works hand in hand with sustainability. Before the word sustainable became a buzz word for good agricultural practices, the owners of the Camatta ranch maintained sustainable practices. What exactly is sustainability? In its most simple form, sustainable agriculture is Farming and Ranching methods that can be used indefinitely because they do not deplete resources, such as soil and water, faster than they are replaced. To our family the Camatta Ranch is a "gem” something precious that we need to take care of for future generations.

For the past 5 years we have been working on a Conservation Easement with the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo to acquire the entire ranch and preserve it from ever being developed. What this means is that we have sold our development rights so the ranch will remain habitat for the native animals and the growing grounds for native plants to enhance the soil until the end of time. This was a family decision. Many people have lived on this land before us, the native people, the Spaniards, ranchers, farmers, our ancestors and now our family. We saw the need to preserve these 50 square miles of land in perpetuity.

There’s an old Native American Proverb.

“We do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

PRESERVED FOREVER

On April 19, the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County entered into a conservation easement on the Camatta Ranch. Members of the Morrison family will continue to own and manage the ranch, but the easement blocks future development on 27,500 acres of the property, close to the size of San Francisco.
