“Why should I purchase my meat from Lazy Arrow Natural Meats?”

Our family has been raising cattle for 6 generations. We were sustainable long before sustainability was a thing. The Morrisons started raising cattle in the late 1800’s and purchased their family ranch in Calabasas California, when Thousand Oaks was rolling pasture lands and cattle had to be driven by cowboys on horseback to the stock yards in downtown Las Angeles. The Morrison family had to recycle and reuse through the great depression and then again during World War 2 to make ends meet, just to survive, not as a fashion statement but to survive and thrive.

We sell Beef Shares.

How we raise our animals is important to our family.

Mark’s Dad was a Veterinarian and his Mom a zoologist so our standards for raising animals are very high. From a young age Mark knew the importance of good nutrition and a healthy habitat. We strive to raise our cattle humanely. What does that mean?

Humanely Raised: All cattle in our program conform to our definition of Humanely. What this means is we provide adequate food and water, as well as shelter from the elements in the form of natural cover, wind breaks, and to treat animals when wounded or sick in order to avoid unnecessary suffering. we must minimize the use of cattle prods (unless absolutely necessary)

It is essential to maintain a balance between proper use of the land, health of the cattle and water. Regenerative agriculture is a practice used to balance nature and agriculture. The two go hand in hand.

A regenerative ranch requires a lot of land, rotational grazing of cows (where cows are moved to different paddocks of grass so the areas that are already grazed on have time to rest and grow back), water, and a good climate suited for the breed of cattle. Pasture raised cattle take longer to mature which means our cattle live a longer life on the rolling hills of the ranch. By having the cattle roam the land which aids in healing and regenerating the soil (as the cows naturally till the soil with their hooves and the dung Beatles get to bury the dung nutrients deep into the soil) and create more life.

Being stocked up with food should be a priority, allowing you to create more self-sufficiency for you and your family. We encourage you to buy beef and pork in bulk, giving you more access to various parts of the animal allows you to save a lot. Before grocery stores as we know them, people harvested animals in bulk. People took charge of their nutrition, and they were familiar with the farmers and the animals.

This Spring, with the completion of the conservation easement on the ranch it enables us to maintain the large grassland pastures of the Camatta ranch in perpetuity for continued regenerative agriculture, which benefits the land, the animals and ultimately the people who benefit from the animals who graze there.

When you nourish yourself with pasture-finished beef and pork, from the Camatta Ranch, you become a part of our mission in re-invigorating the soil and adding life back to this earth and its beings.

FAQs

Bulk Beef

How much freezer space do you need for each share?

Eighth = 2-3 cubic feet. Quarter = 4-5 cubic feet. Half = 7-8 cubic feet. Whole = 15-16 cubic feet

Why is everything frozen?

Frozen meat is the best way to ensure maximal freshness and will last you a long time. This allows you to buy high-quality meat at an affordable price and stay stocked up for a longer time period. Our meat shares are based on the optimum feed in our pastures and the optimum weight of our cattle. We do not harvest from January to April. Therefore, to have healthy pasture raised beef we harvest when our cattle are at their peak.

How long can frozen beef last?

Indefinitely according to food safety guidelines, which means frozen meat will last for a very long time in the freezer - but for maximal freshness, best flavor and texture, we recommend using it within 1 year.

How long will each beef share last me? How to decide which share to get based on family size?

This is highly dependent on if there are kids and adults. And if you are animal-based, carnivore or eat more moderate servings of meat. Also, will you be serving this meat to guests frequently?

Approximate time frames:

  1. Quarter share for single/couple/small family: 4-6 months

  1.  Half beef share for family: 7-9 months

  1.  Whole beef share for family: 9-12 months

What is the best defrosting method for each cut?

Our favorite method is to place your meat package in a bowl of room temp water for a few hours based on the size. This method is best for more immediate use. You can also just place your meat in the fridge overnight and it will be ready to use the next day.

How do you prepare roasts?

Crock Pot , Instant Pots and slow roasters are the easiest way to go. Some of our favorite slow roast cuts are chuck roast, brisket, and rump roast are all great cooked in the crock pot.

What breed of cow do we raise?

Angus. We have been raising 100% Angus beef cows and breeding them to register Angus bulls for over 25 years. Our ranch raised heifers are added to our cow herd to maintain our well adapted genetics. For generations, our specialized cows have grazed the arid grass covered hills of the Camatta ranch.

Are your cows mRNA vaccine free?

Yes.

Are your cows antibiotic-free and steroid free?

Yes.

How old are the animals we harvest?

24-30 months (2 to 2.5 yrs.)

Who does the harvesting and butchering?

We recommend two local harvest/butchers. Ranchita Meat Co. in San Miguel or  Sinton and Sons in Paso Robles Ca.. We bring the live animal to the butcher of your choice on the scheduled harvest day. You make arrangements with them on your cut and wrap specifications. Once your meat has been frozen, you schedule a day to pick up your meat.

Can I get fat, bones and organs in my cow share?

Yes, all of these are available and need to be specified with the butcher of your choice.
